The intent of the Technology Program is to teach students technology related topics that are age and grade appropriate. All lessons meet the Michigan Education Technology Standards approved on October 2009 by the State of Michigan’s Department of Education and meets the MDE’s grade level content expectations (GLCEs).
Grades K-2 Units and Objectives:
· Technology introduction, appropriate uses, types, solving problems, sources of information · Michigan Cyber Safety · Advantages/disadvantages of Technology · Recognize, name and label hardware components, use basic menu commandsUse digital tools (software, drawing tools) and interact with internet based resources, games and websites
Grades 3-5 Units and Objectives:
· Discuss Technologies (past, present, future) to understand they are from human creativity · Discuss case studies involving acceptable/unacceptable uses of technology (file sharing, social networking, text messaging, cyber bullying, plagiarism, source citations, personal info safety · Discuss ways technology has changed life at home, school; proper care of computer materials · Know how to exchange files · Use software packages to share information, create and edit products (newsletters, brochures, web pages and advertisements) · Identify search strategies for locating info, understand websites for bias, multiple sources, inaccurate info · Use digital resources to make everyday decisions (moves to see, products to buy); investigate a state, national or global issue
Grades 6-8 Units and Objectives:
· effective uses of technology to support communication with peers, family or school, discuss security issues related to e-commerce; possible uses to support personal pursuits & learning · Discuss the possible societal impact of technology in the future and reflect on the importance of technology in the past · Discuss issues related to acceptable and responsible use of technology (privacy, security, plagiarism, viruses, file-sharing) and consequences related to unethical use. · Describe risks & dangers associated with online communications and long-term consequences (digital footprint) of taking part in questionable online activities (photos of underage drinking, making threats) · Create an original project (presentation, web page, newsletter, brochure) using a variety of media (graphs, charts, audio, graphics, video) to present information · Use digital tools to explore content with learners from other cultures and use a variety of resources to locate information, evaluate information for accuracy and bias · Gather data examine patterns, apply info for decision making using digital resources · Use databases or spreadsheets to make predictions, develop strategies to assist with solving a problem · Use technology to explore various careers, identify storage devices (CDs, flash drives, SD cards), perform queries on existing databases, use functions in a database (sort charts) · Identify file formats (doc, xls, pdf, txt, jpg, mp3) and use tools to improve accuracy (spell and grammar-check, calculator)
